Baxter State Park

Baxter State Park is the sublime setting for mountains, streams, lakes, and ponds situated deep in the heart of Maine’s North Woods.  The Park lands were purchased and donated to the State of Maine by former Governor Percival P. Baxter.  Governor Baxter also endowed the Park with trust funds that pay a significant portion of the Park’s operating expenses.

The Park’s crown jewel — Mount Katahdin — is perhaps best known as the highest mountain in the State and is sacred to all indigenous peoples of Maine.

Following Governor Baxter’s instructions, the Park is to remain “forever wild;” prioritizing resource protection over recreational access. The Park is unique in the world for the trust structure that Governor Baxter created. Access to the Park is limited and controlled with regulations for visitors and others to protect and preserve Park resources and wilderness for posterity.
